Keeping Safe and Finding Calm in the Code Purple Haze

If you stepped outside in Montgomery County today, or if you are nursing a sudden, stubborn headache like I am tonight, you already know the news. Our local region is currently under a strict Code Purple Air Quality Alert due to heavy Canadian wildfire smoke blanketing Maryland and DC.
With the Air Quality Index reaching very unhealthy levels, local parks are closing, and we are all being urged to move our lives indoors.
On a Friday evening, it’s easy to feel frustrated when our weekend outdoor plans get derailed, or we feel "behind schedule." But sometimes, the environment forces us to simply slow down, stay inside, and focus on the health of our immediate sanctuary: our homes.

While we wait for the skies to clear, here are three quick, high-value ways you can protect your family and optimize your indoor air quality tonight:
Check Your HVAC Filter: Your home’s heating and cooling system is your first line of defense right now. If you haven't changed your air filter recently, look at the MERV rating on the side. A rating between MERV 11 and MERV 13 is the sweet spot for capturing those tiny, microscopic smoke particles before they enter your living space.
Recirculate, Don't Vent: Set your thermostat's fan setting to "Auto" or "On" rather than relying on fresh air intake. Ensure all windows and doors are tightly sealed to keep the outdoor pollutants from creeping into your rooms.
Let the Dust Settle: Avoid heavy vacuuming or using harsh chemical cleaners tonight. Vacuuming can kick up tiny particles that are already settled on your carpets, making your indoor air harder to breathe while your system is already working overtime.
Our homes are designed to be safe, secure environments that protect us from outside elements—a philosophy of safety and comfort that I hold dear every day.
Tonight, let’s give ourselves permission to set aside our to-do lists, pour a cold glass of water, and take some time to rest. Stay safe, breathe easy, and enjoy a peaceful weekend indoors.
If your family is going through a transition—whether you're expanding your family, downsizing your home, or looking to establish permanent roots in a neighborhood like Kensington, Bethesda, or Chevy Chase, MD —let's sit down for a casual coffee.
There will be no high-pressure sales pitches, just real numbers and honest, gentle guidance.
Stay safe, Anda :)
